Brief History
Pearsall was born in Trumansburg, New York, where he was raised by his stepmother from age 5. After fighting for the U.S. Navy in World War II, he attended the University of Illinois, where he obtained a degree in architechtural engineering. Just a few years later, he founded "Craft Associates", a furniture design company which would shape his legacy.
Pearsall began building furniture in his basement, and selling his designs to prominent department stores in New York and surrounding areas. He also did several unique custom designs, taking on such projects even at the pinnacle of his highly succesful career. Because of this, there are countless original, one-of-a-kind Pearsall designs floating around in the world, and nobody quite knows the full extent of his catalog. As you may tell, Adrian is one of our very favorite mid-century designers :) His designs are noted for their distinct, "atomic-age" style, with emphasis on graceful, sweeping, exaggerated curves. His woodwork is typically quite impressive - often requiring a lot of handwork, and contributing to the overall warmth of each piece. While his designs do possess an organic quality, they also seem extraterrestrial. Pearsall played off of popular expectations of what a chair or sofa should look like, abandoning or exaggerating traditional profiles and experimenting with shapes and spatial relationships. His pieces are reflective of the broader post-war mentality, actively and consciously disconnecting from traditional paradigms in attempt to discover new and better ways of doing things.
